Healthcare Information Management Systems

Author: Marion J Ball

Healthcare Information Management Systems, Third edition, will be a comprehensive volume addressing the technical, organizational, and management issues confronted by healthcare professionals in the selection, implementation, and management of healthcare information systems. With contributions from experts in the field, this book focuses on topics such as strategic planning, turning a plan into reality, implementation, patient-centered technologies, privacy, the new culture of patient safety, and the future of technologies in progress. With the addition of 28 new chapters, the Third Edition is also richly peppered with case studies of implementation, both in the United States and abroad. The case studies are evidence that information technology can be implemented efficiently to yield results, yet they do not overlook pitfalls, hurdles, and other challenges that are encountered. Designed for use by physicians, nurses, nursing and medical directors, department heads, CEOs, CFOs, CIOs, COOs, and healthcare informaticians, the book aims to be a indispensible reference.

Reviewer: LouAnn Schraffenberger, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P (Univ of Illinois at Chicago School of Biomed & Health Info Mgmt)
Description: This book, one is a series addressing health informatics, is a strategic planning, development and implementation guide for healthcare information systems. It includes both theory and practical scenarios that describe the state of the art in healthcare information systems planning and implementation today. The previous edition was published nine years ago.
Purpose: The book intends to share a series of information technology (IT) success stories and serve as a vehicle for knowledge sharing that will benefit future IT implementations. Comparing this edition to the previous edition, only six chapter topics are based on the same concepts. In a sense, this is a new book. It intends to give a fresh look at the changes in technology, planning, and human-computer interactions that exist today.
Audience: The audience for this book is the IT team: nurse informatician, health information administrator, medical technology officer, security officer, network developer, project manager, technology planner, systems analyst - and students preparing for any of these roles:everyone who has a part in the design, implementation, and maintenance of health information management systems. The series editors are well known, well respected professionals in the healthcare information systems industry. The author-contributors of the individual chapters are equally well respected practitioners and academicians who have lived what they are describing. This makes the book practical and applicable.
Features: Section 1 (six chapters) addresses the planning and developing an IT strategy. Two cases studies from Baylor and Clarian Health are included as well as an international perspective. Section 2 (five chapters) addresses preparing for organizational change and again include two U.S. and one international case study. Section 3 (11 chapters) should be labeled "CIO Stories" as nine leaders share their experiences in transforming and implementing systems. Section 4 (10 chapters) addresses patient-centered technologies such as measuring outcomes, interviewing patients with a computer, pharmacy systems, computer-enhanced radiology, etc. Section 5 (10 chapters) provides an outlook on future technologies. Exciting possibilities and realities in the use of technology to improve patient care are discussed.
Assessment: An impressive group of IT practitioners and consultants have provided a wealth of information regarding healthcare information systems in this one book. It is a comprehensive guide to the strategic planning, development, and implementation of healthcare information systems. Whether in a classroom or in an IT or information manager's office, the reader will benefit from the advice offered by the practitioners who work in the world of healthcare IT. Even if you don't read the whole book, you are going to benefit from the experiences shared in individual chapters. It is a terrific book.
